REEFSTEAMERS STEAM TRAIN TRIPS

Date: 4 February 2012

Venue: Maraisburg, Railway Station, 6th street Maraisburg, Gauteng

Reefsteamers is dedicated to the preservation of steam trains and their history, and this trip is ideal for those who wish to return to the romantic time of steam-driven transport. Hop on the train at Maraisburg station in Johannesburg and become lulled to relaxation by the sound of the train’s pumping wheels and the occasional spray of steam.
The train stops in Magaliesburg, where guests have the option of either stopping at the three-star Magaliesburg Country Hotel for a lovely buffet lunch or stopping at the Magaliesburg station itself for a wholesome picnic out in the sun. There is a lot of space for the kids to run around and play here, as well as things to do such as jumping castles and water slides. There is also an area that is covered, offering the ideal opportunity for braais. The picnic area also has plenty of shady trees and is located alongside a tranquil river.

The return journey is usually the highlight of the day - the climb from Magaliesburg to Krugersdorp is a challenge for the locomotive with all the steep gradients and sharp curves, and the enthusiast can enjoy the sounds of the train working hard. It is said that there is only one man-made machine that can express its emotions and that’s a steam locomotive. Sit back and listen to it talking to you!

COOPER'S CAVE PICNIC AND WALKING TOUR

Date: 4 February 2011

Venue: Maropeng Visitor Centre, on the R400, just off the R563 Hekpoort road, Sterkfontein

Time:The tour will start at 09h00 at Sterkfontein Caves

Cost: The cost of the tour is R350 per person and includes a light picnic lunch.

How would you like to explore a living museum, where the fossils embedded in the rock describe the world as it was between 1.4- and 1.8-million years ago?

Maropeng and palaeobiologist Dr Christine Steininger are offering budding palaeontologists the rare opportunity to explore the 1.5-million-year-old Cooper’s Cave. Located near the famous Sterkfontein Caves, Cooper’s Cave has yielded numerous fossils of previously unidentified animals, and a rich assembly of stone tools.

The day’s activities include an interactive fossil and site talk, exploring a cave, a chance to look for fossils in recently excavated deposits, and learning how to make stone tools.

A fun family day out in the Cradle of Humankind

This is a must for adults and children with an interest in palaeontology and archaeology. Remember to pack a jersey, torch, hat, apply sunscreen and wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes – and bring your camera!
