REEFSTEAMERS DAY TRIPS

Date: 25 September; 2, 30 October; 6 November; 4, 11, 18 December 2010
Venue: Maraisburg Railway Station, 38 6th Street, Maraisburg, Florida, Roodepoort
Entry: R195 pp; Children 4 – 12: R140 pp; Children under 4: free
Time: 09h00 - 16h30
Reefsteamers is dedicated to the preservation of steam trains and their history, and this trip is ideal for those who wish to return to the romantic time of steam-driven transport. Hop on the train at Maraisburg station in Johannesburg and become lulled to relaxation by the sound of the train’s pumping wheels and the occasional spray of steam.
The train stops in Magaliesburg, where guests have the option of either stopping at the three-star Magaliesburg Country Hotel for a lovely buffet lunch or stopping at the Magaliesburg station itself for a wholesome picnic out in the sun. There is a lot of space for the kids to run around and play here, as well as things to do such as jumping castles and water slides. There is also an area that is covered, offering the ideal opportunity for braais. The picnic area also has plenty of shady trees and is located alongside a tranquil river.
The return journey is usually the highlight of the day – the climb from Magaliesburg to Krugersdorp is a challenge for the locomotive with all the steep gradients and sharp curves, and the enthusiast can enjoy the sounds of the train working hard. It is said that there is only one man-made machine that can express its emotions and that’s a steam locomotive. Sit back and listen to it talking to you!

Venue: Absa Money & Banking Museum, 187 Fox Street, Johannesburg
Entry: FREE
Time: 09h00 - 16h00
Money makes the world go round – and the one-of-a-kind Absa Money & Banking Museum tells the fascinating story of currency throughout this country’s history. The Absa Money & Banking Museum is perfect for moms and dads looking to find festive season holiday activities for their children. It is the only museum of its kind in South Africa, and is home to the largest collection of money used in this country’s past. It displays ranges from fairly early money forms, such as cowrie shells and Venetian glass beads, through to gold coins recovered from sunken ships. In the past, people traded with commodity money, such as salt, sea shells, metal and animals. The Museum also houses a collection of 600 money boxes, as well as technology exhibits. “The Museum’s educational programmes are aimed at increasing financial literacy, creating awareness for economic history and highlighting the importance of saving,” says Dr. Paul Bayliss, Corporate Social Investment Manager at Absa. The Museum specialises in tours for the hearing-impaired, and entrance is free of charge – now that’s good news in the current financial climate!
