The People’s Theatre presents the story of bravery and strength of character, “The Jungle Book”. The production is based on the book by Rudyard Kipling, and sees Mowgli the Man-Cub grow up in the forest among the animals. His life is threatened by Shere Khan the tiger, who hates humankind, and the only way that Mowgli can survive is by outwitting the tiger, who is faster and stronger than him. The audience finds loveable characters in the form of Baloo and Bagheera, who become Mowgli’s protectors, and there is enough adventure in the show to make everyone breathe a sigh of relief with the evil Shere Kahn is beaten at his own game. The audience can expect the usual colourful sets and costumes as the jungle is brought to life on stage.

HEIDI

Date: 15 March - 17 April 2010
Venue: National Childrens Theatre, 3 Junction Avenue Parktown Johannesburg
Time: 09h00 - 00h00
HEIDI – BACK AT LAST AFTER MANY YEARS!
An atmosphere of great excitement will soon be gripping the National Children’s Theatre as preparations for Joyce Levinsohn’s Easter holiday production of Heidi get under way.
Heidi is one of the most-loved children’s stories of all time. Johanna Spyri’s stories have been translated into 40 languages, and more than 80,000,000 copies of her books have been sold.
“No child should grow up without having seen Heidi come to life,” says Joyce Levinsohn. “Its message is one for all South African children, as it’s about the power of love, about conquering hardships, and about caring and sharing. Even though it’s a story about a little Swiss girl growing up in the Alps, it’s both timeless and topical.”
Perfect for children of all ages, Heidi promises to be a fun-filled adventure with thrills and spills, laughter and a few tears, combining beautiful music and the kind of audience participation that is a hallmark of National Children’s Theatre productions.
“After seeing our Heidi, the children will want to go home and read all the Heidi books, and that’s a big part of our mission – to encourage literacy,” adds Joyce.
Don’t miss this delightful production of such a well-loved story!

Venue: Absa Money & Banking Museum, 187 Fox Street, Johannesburg
Entry: FREE
Time: 09h00 - 16h00
Money makes the world go round – and the one-of-a-kind Absa Money & Banking Museum tells the fascinating story of currency throughout this country’s history. The Absa Money & Banking Museum is perfect for moms and dads looking to find festive season holiday activities for their children. It is the only museum of its kind in South Africa, and is home to the largest collection of money used in this country’s past. It displays ranges from fairly early money forms, such as cowrie shells and Venetian glass beads, through to gold coins recovered from sunken ships. In the past, people traded with commodity money, such as salt, sea shells, metal and animals. The Museum also houses a collection of 600 money boxes, as well as technology exhibits. “The Museum’s educational programmes are aimed at increasing financial literacy, creating awareness for economic history and highlighting the importance of saving,” says Dr. Paul Bayliss, Corporate Social Investment Manager at Absa. The Museum specialises in tours for the hearing-impaired, and entrance is free of charge – now that’s good news in the current financial climate!
