How to Bake Cookies with Kids (without driving yourself mad)

I admit, I'm not Super Mom. I can't even get my 5 year old to dress himself, so yeah...

Last year I thought baking cookies would be a great “bonding” experience.   Baking cookies!  Easy as pie...... (Because every dimpled toddler can roll out perfect dough!)

My 2 boys "helped" by screaming and jamming cookie cutters into lumps of dough (ready or not) and I lost my patience within 10 minutes. They spent the rest of our mother/son baking time parked in front of Disney Channel while I finished the cookies in peace.

I daresay we were happier that way.

During the Easter weekend, my boys wanted to help with the cookies again. And since they are 4 and 5,
I gave them another go. They can at least stir, right?

They stood on stools next to me while I melted butter on the stove, and then I let them stir while I poured oatmeal in. Everything was lovely until they started to bicker about who has got the biggest wooden spoon, etc.......

Rather than pound my head against the counter having to listen to their bickering and them asking, "What can I do? What can I do? WHAT CAN I DO?" every 15 seconds, I came up with a brilliant idea: Let them wash the dishes.

It's genius! What preschooler doesn't love splashing around in bubble water? I let them wash anything they wanted to!

I guess I should treat my kitchen like a professional kitchen--all new staff have to slave at the dish station before they can move on to actual cooking.

KIDS CRAFTS AND RECIPES

Peanut Butter and Jam "Sushi" rolls

Fun to make and even more fun to eat, you should give these peanut butter and jam "sushi" rolls a try.  To make eight rolls, you will need:
  • 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter

Once you have all of the ingredients, here's what you do next:
  1. Remove the crusts from the bread.  Then flatten the bed with a rolling pin.
  2. Spread 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and 1 tablespoon of jam on each slice of bread.
  3. Roll each slice into a tight spiral then cut each spiral into 4 pieces.
