THE TRUE TEST - TEMPER TANTRUMS

The only people who find temper tantrums amusing are a child's grandparents—because it’s finally payback time.

A tantrum is usually like a storm that appears out of nowhere. Lightly at first..................

"Can I have that?" is the beginning of the storm ... the wind picking up. "And that?" is the rustling in the trees.

With the utterence of the word "No" the storm suddenly rears its ugly head. "Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!" A temper tantrum can be accompanied by any amount of kicking, screaming, shouting and laying on the floor.

No other behavior can be as infuriating, embarrassing and downright comical as the temper tantrum.. Because the tantrum is really IT. It's the true test. In fact, and I know we hate to admit it, but it's almost fun to watch other parents deal with one, especially when your own child is actually being good.

How to handle a tantrum?

Here are some useful hints and tips to help you deal with those frustrated, screaming and kicking red little faces

1. Be sure to be firm and in control. Moreover, do not throw tantrums yourself. Spanking and yelling at the child during such episodes is not helpful. Doing this only triggers the child to cry and scream louder.

2. Remember not to give in to the child's demands. Children may be small and younger, but do not underestimate them. If you pamper them just to keep them quiet, you may develop an impression that he should just throw tantrums whenever he wants something or whenever he wants a person to do something for him.

3. When the child throws tantrums at home, just put him in a room where he can scream, kick and cry as freely as he chooses. Call this "time out" for the child.

4. If you cannot leave your child alone while he is having an episode, just sit away from him. Do not lift a finger or try to pacify him, let him do it voluntarily. Avoid developing eye contact with the child during the tantrum episode.

5. If you happen to be in a public place when the tantrum occurs, take the child to the car. Put on his seatbelt and let him vent his frustration inside. If, unfortunately, you are in a long line in a grocery, let the child have his moment. Still, do not try to pacify him. He may be smart enough to capitalize on the fact that there are other people around just to get what he wants

Talk to your child after the temper tantrum episode. Emphasize that what he did was inappropriate... Toddlers also understand what his parents tell him, so talk to him also as gently and as patiently as possible. Teach the child the habit of just saying, "I'm angry!" whenever he feels frustrated and disappointment.

UNIVERSAL CHILDREN'S DAY
20 Nov 2008

First observed in 1953. It is a time to honour children by special ceremonies and festivals and to make children's needs known to governments. The adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the creation of Universal Children's Day reflects the growing recognition that children are important and valued members of society, now and in the future. Universal Children's Day celebrates children just for being themselves. It reminds us that children need love and respect to grow to their full potential. It is a day to listen to children, to marvel at their uniqueness and all they have to offer.

A key objective of Universal Children's Day is to increase awareness of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since its adoption by the United Nations, the Convention has been signed or ratified by more countries than any other international treaty. Over the past decade, the Convention has proven to be a valuable tool for promoting the rights of children everywhere around the world.

A Poem about Children's Rights

This poem was printed on a calendar for 2002, displayed in the United Nations Building in New York.

There shall be peace on earth, but not until

All children daily eat their fill,

Go warmly clad against the winter wind

And learn their lessons with a tranquil mind.

And then, released from hunger, fear and need

Regardless of their color, race or creed

Look upward smiling to their skies,

Their faith in life reflected in their eyes.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Peanut Butter Muffins

Prep time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup banana (about 1 banana), mashed with a fork
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed (left out of the freezer until it's soft)
  • 1/4 cup nonfat dry milk
  • 2 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • nonstick spray

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius).
  2. In a small bowl, break the eggs and use a fork to beat them a little bit.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the milk, mashed banana, peanut butter, vegetable oil, apple juice, dry milk, and the eggs from the small bowl. Mix with a mixing spoon until the mixture is creamy.
  4. Add the flour, baking powder, and baking soda into the large bowl. Mix again.
  5. Line a muffin tin with paper liners or lightly spray with nonstick spray. Spoon in the muffin mix. Fill each muffin cup about 2/3 of the way up.
  6. Bake for about 15 minutes.
  7. When your muffins are finished baking, remove from muffin tin and cool them on the wire rack. Then it's time to taste and share!

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF LIFE

Have a first child

A man and his wife were making their first doctor visit, the wife being pregnant with their first child.

After everything checked out, the doctor took a small stamp and stamped the wife's stomach with indelible ink.

The couple was curious about what the stamp was for, so when they got home, the husband got out his magnifying glass to try to see what it was.

In very tiny letters, the stamp said, "When you can read this, come back and see me."
