ADDED CHEMICALS IN FOOD AND THE ILL EFFECTS ON CHILDREN |
Our foods these days are filled with many added chemicals called intentional additives. These may be artificial sweeteners, preservatives, colourants, flavourants, flavour enhancers etc. Some of these additives have been linked to health problems (such as cancer, asthma and hyperactivity) and have been banned in other countries. However, they are still allowed in our foods in South Africa. As parents we should be aware of these and look to buy products that are labelled “Preservative free”, “MSG free”, “Tartrazine free”, “Pesticide free”, “Organic’ etc. (And while you are at it, why not also buy products which are “GMO free”, “cruelty free”, “hormone free” as well as “free range” animal products too?) Here is an article with regards to getting manufacturers to stop using six artificial colorants. “SATURDAY April 12, 2008 (foodconsumer.org) — The UK Food Standards Agency on April 10 recommended ministers call for manufacturers to stop using six artificial colors or colorants by the end of 2009 and lobby for a European Union ban, The Independent, a UK newspaper reported April 11. The agency will issue a public advisory to warn parents about the dangers of tartrazine (E102) (FD&C Yellow 5 in the U.S.), quinoline yellow (E104) (banned in the U.S.), sunset yellow (E110) (FD&C Yellow 6), carmoisine (E122) (banned in the U.S.), ponceau 4R (E124) (banned in the U.S.) and allura red (E129) (FD&C Red 40). Professor Jim Stevenson from Southampton University, and author of the report, was quoted by wikipedia as saying “This has been a major study investigating an important area of research. The results suggest that consumption of certain mixtures of artificial food colours and sodium benzoate preservative are associated with increases in hyperactive behaviour in children. The Independent said research showed 30 percent of cases of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD are caused by these colorants used in food and beverages. A scientist affiliated foodconsumer.org suggested that consumers should take a look at the label when they decide to buy or use a food or beverage if they want to avoid artificial colorants. To help quickly spot artificial colorants, he suggested consumers at the color of the food or drink. Bright colors tend to be artificial.”

IMPORTANCE OF MOTHERS' BEHAVIOUR FOR FATHERS' INVOLVEMENT |
In recent years there has been considerable research from the US on positive outcomes for children whose fathers become ‘involved’ in their care. An 'involved father' is someone that plays an active role in a childs emotional, spiritual, academic, physical and social development. A healthy father presence is a three-part process that includes engagement, availability and responsibility in relationships to children. Fathers who make the effort to interact with their children and allot time for children satisfy the need for healthy father presence. Simple actions such as supporting children at sporting events, music recitals and school plays and, most importantly, just making time to listen to a concern sends a clear message to kids that they are valued. |

Mothers play an important role in determining how much fathers get involved in taking care of their infants, according to new research. “Mothers are in the driver’s seat,” said Sarah Schoppe-Sullivan, co-author of the study and assistant professor of human development and family science at Ohio State University.“Mothers can be very encouraging to fathers, and open the gate to their involvement in child care, or be very critical, and close the gate.“This is the first real evidence that mothers, through their behavior, act as gatekeepers by either fostering or curtailing how much fathers take part in caring for their baby.” |

Science LessonMiss Jones had been giving her second-grade students a lesson on science. She had explained about magnets and showed how they would pick up nails and other bits of iron. Now it was question time, and she asked, "My name begins with the letter 'M' and I pick up things. What am I?" A little boy on the front row proudly said, "You're a mother!"
